Jake

What follows is a conversation (of sorts) that I had with a newborn baby this morning. It’s overly sentimental in places, but I don’t want to edit it or change it because I was overly sentimental in his presence. Clearly that was meant to be the reaction. So I post it here as an expression of thought, like all of my writing.

What is prejudice?
I know your answer, for all you are you give to the world without consideration.
What is hate?
I know your answer, for you have not been tainted by such, incapable of such expression just yet.
What is joy?
I know your answer, for I see you in your Mum’s arms, a smile – yes lips move.
What is love?
I know your answer, for your hand, the tip of my thumb, reaches out to explore.
What is lust?
I know your answer, for you are yet undecided, boy or girl, perhaps both, you will share your wonder with.
What is time?
I know your answer, for you are what we were all once, a beginning, yet you will become you – unique as the imprint my finger leaves.
What is sadness?
I know your answer, for I have seen you without your Mum, yes she who defines all that is good in your world
What is a geek?
I know your answer, hah he who talks of lightsabers in your presence, penguins & contemplation.
What are words?
I know your answer, for you communicate everything I need to know without even making a sound. Your face an opus of meaning.
What are these shapes that huddle around me?
I know your answer, for you are wrapped in those that love you – but perhaps you speak also of the wings that cradle you – that too you will come to understand.
What am I?
I know not the answer, for you define you, no other has that privilege – do so in what you love little one, know that as long as I exist I am here. Read these words when you are capable of such, they will grow in their power. Know this, you have a father in me, not your father he is a wonderful man and I take nothing from him. But your Mum is special, she saved me – for that a debt – a debt I repay to you. Ask it and it’s done. Sleep now, forsaking that you know what that means, but close your eyes and see the world as it really is.

Paul, this is stunning. Absolutely beautiful. You express your thoughts with such clarity and depth.

    ‘What is time?

I adore this part so much. So touching.

What a perfect gift for this new light as he begins his journey. I am sure it will mean so very much to his family and him over years to come. Such a joy to read. A real joy. I love reading your thoughts, for you speak with such emotion and warmth. Such insight. Thank you for sharing your immense talent with us.

Exquisite words Paul, written with the very breath of the moment, pulling us all into it with you, so that we too can share what you see and feel. I can’t imagine a more perfect tribute to the love of a good friend than making a present of your words to her brand new son. I know she’ll treasure them, and you, always.

  4. Thanks Dan – so kind of you to take the time to respond. I hope Mum & little one like also.
